How to Choose Wall Art Sizes Above a Sofa

FREMAT · 30/10/2026

Six black-framed artworks arranged above a sofa — ستة تابلوهات ببراويز سوداء فوق كنبة

Start with the sofa, not the empty wall. Measure its width, choose the total width of your artwork arrangement, then count the gaps between frames. A paper layout is the simplest way to judge the result before ordering or drilling.

1. Measure the space you actually have

Write down the sofa width and the clear wall space above it. Note nearby doors, curtains, air conditioners and wall lights. For a corner sofa, decide which straight section the artwork will sit above rather than measuring the entire L-shape.

2. Choose a starting width

As a styling starting point, try an arrangement around two-thirds of the sofa width. This is a guide, not a rule: the room, the artwork and the available wall space may call for a different proportion.

Example: for a 240 cm sofa, two-thirds is 160 cm. That means the width of the whole arrangement, including spaces between frames—not 160 cm for each picture.

3. Include every gap

For frames in one horizontal row: total width = sum of frame widths + sum of gaps. Confirm the outer frame measurements for the actual product before using this calculation.

  • Two frames, each 70 cm wide, with a 10 cm gap: 70 + 10 + 70 = 150 cm.
  • Three frames, each 50 cm wide, with two 5 cm gaps: 50 + 5 + 50 + 5 + 50 = 160 cm.

These are planning examples, not specifications for a particular set. Check the orientation too: a 50 × 70 cm portrait frame is 50 cm wide, not 70 cm wide.

4. Choose one piece, a pair or a trio

If you prefer a ledge arrangement, explore shelf and frame sets. Include the shelf, lights and the frames in your measurements.

5. Test the arrangement before drilling

Cut paper to the outer size of each frame. Use wall-safe temporary tape, tested on a discreet spot, to try the arrangement. Look from the room entrance and from your usual seat. Check that the lower edge stays clear of people sitting and moving on the sofa. Adjust until the artwork relates comfortably to the furniture.

For an existing Fremat example, Quiet Forms — Statement Gallery Wall Set of 6 lists an overall footprint of 170 × 100 cm including planned gaps. It includes a full-size placement template; use its specified arrangement rather than treating all six frames as one straight row.

Before you order

  • Confirm whether the stated size applies to each frame or the whole arrangement.
  • Check frame finish, orientation, glass or acrylic front, and what is included.
  • Measure the complete footprint, including gaps and any shelf.
  • Use fixings suitable for your wall and the product weight; a paper template is not a load-bearing fixing guide.
  • Shipping is calculated at checkout.

Common questions

Does a three-piece set need three times the sofa width?

No. Add the widths of the three frames and the two gaps, then compare that total with the sofa.

Should I centre the art on the wall or the sofa?

For a composition intended to sit above a sofa, start by centring it on that sofa section, then adjust for nearby furniture and wall features.

Can I use my own picture?

Yes. Start with Create Your Own Frame and choose a size that fits the plan you measured.
